Day 4
Today we learned about different types of joints and learned how to make them in a joint making exercise. We had to use 100x50 pieces of timber the joints we had to make were half dove tail, dove tail. We learned about how to look at the timber and to know if its straight and to get a clean piece of timber that doesn't have knots because a piece of pinewood timber has knots in it then you can cut the knot off or go around the knot and when you come to use a chisel its hard to chisel on a piece of wood that has knots and the type of timber that used is pinewood timber

Christchurch Earthquake
The types of buildings in christchurch that were affected in the quake were old heritage stone type buildings, high rise buildings e.g. hotels, office buildings, car parks.
Some of the buildings collapsed in falling down sideways, pancake formation one floor on top of the other floor some have been flattened by boulders e.g. rsa building
They could prevent it by applying more bracing to the buildings add giant shock absorbers into the foundation so that when a earthquake hits the shock absorbers take all the shock from the quake, make the buildings have more supports so that if one breaks or gets damaged in a earthquake then they would still have a backup support for the building to stand on
The area that has had the most damage is the CBD of christchurch and the epicenter lyttleton
